RuneScape Cardcore: How Trading Cards Are Changing OSRS
The OSRS TCG RuneLite plugin created by Az brings booster packs, collectible cards and a complete collection system to Old School RuneScape. The wider community has since used it alongside tools such as Felmeme’s Bronzeman TCG plugin to create new challenge formats such as Cardcore.
Trading card games are no longer limited to physical cards, tabletop matches or dedicated digital TCG platforms.
A RuneLite plugin called OSRS TCG has brought card collecting and booster pack openings directly into Old School RuneScape. Players can earn credits through regular gameplay, spend those credits on virtual card packs and gradually build a collection based on RuneScape items, monsters, NPCs, bosses and other recognisable content.
The card-collecting plugin was created by Az and has quickly captured the attention of the OSRS community. Players can use it as an additional collection system alongside their normal account, while community contributors have also adapted it into new self-imposed challenge formats.
One of those emerging formats is known as Cardcore, where the cards a player obtains can determine which items, enemies and activities become available to their account.
OSRS TCG was not originally designed by Az as a dedicated Cardcore game mode. Az created the card-collecting plugin, while the wider community developed the rules and supporting tools that turned the collection system into a new way of playing RuneScape.
What Is the OSRS TCG RuneLite Plugin?
The OSRS TCG plugin is a community-created RuneLite plugin developed by Az. It adds a collectible trading card system alongside normal Old School RuneScape gameplay.
Players earn credits as they progress through OSRS. Those credits can then be spent on booster packs containing cards based on RuneScape items, NPCs, monsters, bosses and other recognisable content from the game.
Play RuneScape
Gain experience, level skills, defeat NPCs and continue progressing through Old School RuneScape.
Earn Credits
Eligible in-game activity rewards the player with credits that can be spent through the plugin.
Open Booster Packs
Players redeem their credits for virtual packs containing random OSRS trading cards.
Build a Collection
Track standard cards, foil cards, rarities, card scores and overall collection progress.
Buying Packs With Credits
The plugin includes a shop where players can spend credits earned by playing Old School RuneScape. At present, the shop includes the standard pack shown in the plugin interface.
This gives ordinary gameplay an additional reward loop. Gaining experience or defeating NPCs does not just progress the RuneScape account—it can also move the player closer to their next trading card pack.
Official OSRS TCG Plugin
OSRS TCG was created by Az and can be installed through the RuneLite Plugin Hub.
Open the official RuneLite plugin page →What Opening an OSRS TCG Pack Looks Like
OSRS TCG recreates one of the most recognisable parts of any trading card game: opening a sealed booster pack without knowing which cards are inside.
The cards initially appear face down. Players can then click or flip them individually to reveal the card, its rarity and the number of points associated with it.
The face-down cards, individual reveals, rarities, foil variants and point values recreate the anticipation players already associate with opening physical Pokémon, One Piece, Magic: The Gathering and other TCG booster packs.
Building an OSRS TCG Card Collection
Every card earned through the plugin is added to the player’s collection. The full collection interface allows players to browse the cards they have obtained and search through the wider OSRS TCG card library.
Cards can be organised and filtered by criteria such as rarity, ownership, duplicates, missing cards and foil status. Players can also sort cards by score, making it easier to find their rarest or most valuable pulls.
With thousands of available cards and a searchable collection interface, OSRS TCG can be enjoyed as a long-term collection goal even by players who are not following Cardcore restrictions.
What Is RuneScape Cardcore?
Cardcore is an emerging community-created Old School RuneScape challenge format where the cards a player pulls determine which parts of the game they are permitted to use.
Instead of beginning with access to every weapon, item, NPC and boss, a Cardcore account must obtain the corresponding card before that content becomes available under the player’s chosen rules.
Pulling a basic tool could unlock a new training method. Pulling an item important for completing a quest could open a new progression path. Pulling a powerful boss or enemy card could completely change the direction of the account.
“You cannot use it until you pull its card.”
The central community-created idea behind RuneScape CardcoreCardcore is not an official Old School RuneScape mode, and it was not designed solely by Az. It has grown through experimentation and contributions from RuneScape players, plugin developers, streamers and their communities.
Az created the OSRS TCG card-collecting plugin. Community contributor Felmeme created the Bronzeman TCG plugin, which helped make the restricted Cardcore-style game mode possible.
Az has also credited Felmeme for being highly cooperative and working closely with him as the plugins and community-created format developed.
Although OSRS TCG was not specifically designed for Cardcore, Az anticipated that players might use the collection system to create their own restricted game modes.
Because of this, a large portion of RuneScape’s quest-specific items were intentionally left out of the card pool. Requiring players to randomly pull every minor quest item could make a Cardcore account frustrating or extremely difficult to progress.
Many quest-specific items are also less iconic than major weapons, enemies, bosses and equipment, meaning they would not necessarily create the same excitement when revealed from a booster pack.
Faux’s Exfauxdia Cardcore YouTube Series
Popular Old School RuneScape streamer and content creator Faux has taken the community-created format further by creating a TCG-locked Hardcore Ironman series called Exfauxdia Cardcore.
Rather than treating the plugin only as an additional collection log, Faux uses the cards he pulls to determine which items his account can use and which NPCs it is permitted to attack.
This turns every booster pack into a meaningful progression event. A single card pull can unlock a useful weapon, an item important for completing a quest, a new enemy or an entirely different route through the game.
Faux’s first Exfauxdia episode introduces the account, explains the challenge and demonstrates how OSRS TCG and community-created restrictions can be combined into a complete RuneScape game mode.
Exfauxdia, its gameplay rules and the featured stream content belong to Faux. Links are provided so readers can support the original creator and follow the series directly.
Because Cardcore is still extremely new, Faux has explained that its rules are not a perfect science. The rules may need to evolve as unusual interactions and previously unconsidered situations appear.
Logic, fairness and feedback from the livestream chat can be used to resolve edge cases that were not anticipated when the account began.
Exfauxdia Cardcore Rules
Faux’s current rules create a direct relationship between his card collection and the content available to his Hardcore Ironman.
- Credits can be earned by gaining experience, levelling or killing NPCs.
- Booster packs can be opened for 2,500 credits per pack.
- The account can only use items for which the corresponding card has been unlocked.
- The account can only attack NPCs for which the corresponding card has been unlocked.
- The account may speak to NPCs without owning their card.
- The account cannot attack a locked NPC, even if it can interact or speak with that NPC.
- All required available card items needed for a quest must be unlocked before they can be used.
- When a quest contains an NPC fight, the NPC must be unlocked when a matching card exists.
- Content that does not have an associated card is generally assumed to be unlocked.
- Mistakes may happen, but a reasonable punishment can be agreed upon with the livestream chat.
OSRS contains thousands of items, NPCs and unique interactions. Community judgement prevents an unexpected edge case from permanently blocking the account while still preserving the challenge.
How Foil Cards Work in Cardcore
Foil cards are rare enough that they should feel exciting, anticipated and genuinely rewarding.
Rather than acting as a simple visual variation, foil cards can provide more powerful unlocks under Faux’s Cardcore rules.
Vertical Item Unlocks
A foil item can unlock the matching item and lower tiers in the same progression path.
Boss Collection Unlocks
A foil boss can unlock that boss’s unique collection-log rewards.
Horizontal Unlocks
Some foil cards can unlock related variants instead of lower tiers.
Foil Item Cards
A foil item unlocks the item shown on the card and items beneath it in the same tier progression.
For example, a foil mithril axe could unlock bronze, iron, steel, black and mithril axes. It would not unlock adamant, rune or other higher-level axes.
Foil Boss Cards
A foil boss card can unlock all unique collection-log rewards associated with that boss.
For example, a foil General Graardor card could unlock Bandos armour, the Bandos hilt and associated boss uniques.
Horizontal Foil Unlocks
Some RuneScape equipment does not fit neatly into a simple vertical tier system. In these cases, a foil card may unlock related items at the same level.
For example, a foil god d’hide shield could unlock other god d’hide shield variants rather than every lower-tier shield in the game. These decisions can be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Why Cardcore Works So Well in Old School RuneScape
Old School RuneScape is particularly well suited to a TCG-based challenge because the game already revolves around long-term progression, rare drops, collection logs and self-imposed account restrictions.
- Ironman mode restricts trading and requires players to obtain their own items.
- Hardcore Ironman adds the risk of permanently losing Hardcore status.
- Ultimate Ironman removes access to a traditional bank.
- Tileman accounts restrict movement until additional tiles are earned.
- Chunk-locked accounts restrict players to specific areas of the game world.
Cardcore builds on this tradition by replacing predictable progression with the randomness of trading card packs.
One player might unlock a powerful weapon early but lack the skills or supporting equipment needed to use it. Another player might pull a valuable boss card but remain blocked by a missing item needed for progression.
This means every Cardcore account can develop differently, creating natural stories and unexpected progression routes.
Why Booster Pack Openings Change the Experience
Booster pack openings work because the player never knows which unlock will appear next.
In a physical TCG, a rare pull may improve a competitive deck or become an important part of a collection. In RuneScape Cardcore, the correct card can unlock an entirely new part of the game.
- A new weapon or armour upgrade
- A previously unavailable training method
- An item important for completing a quest
- A new monster or boss encounter
- A valuable collection-log grind
- A region or activity needed for future progression
Even a card that appears weak can become extremely valuable when it unlocks a required item, an important NPC or a missing step in a longer progression chain.
The cards are not merely cosmetic collectibles. Under Cardcore rules, they actively shape how the account is played.
Trading Card Games Are Moving Into Other Games
The popularity of the OSRS TCG plugin highlights how influential trading card mechanics have become across gaming.
TCGs such as Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece Card Game and Disney Lorcana have helped bring collecting and booster pack culture to an enormous audience.
Players have become familiar with the excitement of:
- Opening booster packs
- Chasing rare and foil cards
- Completing full collections
- Trading with other players
- Comparing pulls and collection progress
- Building strategies around random cards
OSRS TCG takes those familiar systems and places them inside an MMORPG. Instead of building a traditional card deck, the collection can become an additional progression and challenge system.
Trading cards are becoming more than a standalone product or game. Collecting, rarity, packs and foil mechanics are becoming flexible systems that can reshape how players experience other genres.
Could Cardcore Spread to Other MMORPGs?
Old School RuneScape may be an ideal home for Cardcore, but the concept could be adapted to many other MMORPGs and online games.
A card-based challenge could potentially be used to unlock:
- Weapons and armour in World of Warcraft
- Jobs, equipment or duties in Final Fantasy XIV
- Classes and regions in Guild Wars 2
- Skills, equipment and bosses in RuneScape 3
- Gear sets and zones in The Elder Scrolls Online
- Crafting recipes and enemies in survival MMORPGs
Packs could be earned through experience, achievements, boss kills, quests or exploration. Streamers could then build entire series around the cards they pull and the restrictions those cards create.
Combining random TCG unlocks with long-term MMORPG progression creates an enormous amount of replayability.

The Future of OSRS TCG and Cardcore
Cardcore remains a very new concept, but it already has many of the ingredients needed to become a popular OSRS community challenge.
It combines the nostalgia and long-term progression of Old School RuneScape with the collecting, rarity and booster-pack excitement of a trading card game.
As creators and community developers continue experimenting with the format, players may develop new formats such as:
- Group Ironman Cardcore accounts
- Competitive pack-opening races
- Collection completion challenges
- Region-locked Cardcore accounts
- Shared card collections between teams
- Alternative foil-card rules
- Seasonal Cardcore competitions
For the wider trading card community, OSRS TCG is another sign that TCG culture is expanding beyond card shops and tabletop games.
Cards are becoming part of how players experience MMORPGs, interact with livestream communities and create new ways to play games that have existed for decades.
